Mountain Bikes
Mountain bikes
are designed to be much more rugged than your average road bike. The
strains and rigors of riding off-road require exceptionally strong frames
and forks, not to mention larger wheels and tires. Many of today’s
bikes even incorporate complex suspension systems.
There are many design differences between road bikes and mountain bikes. A mountain bike frame is designed to give the rider an “upright” riding position, making it easier to maneuver over and around obstacles. They also often utilize a disc braking system, similar to automobiles, greatly increasing their stopping power.
Riding mountain bikes often takes one into remote locations and adverse conditions. This is why many riders wear body armor. This armor helps reduce the injuries that can happen quite easily on trails, which is of tremendous benefit when you’re miles from the nearest hospital.
